Having fun with chili bowls

4_chili_bowls

Hi Everyone,

Living with an avid hunter and becoming a dandy venison cook inspired these bowls.

4 of the deer track chili bowls lived through my first return to the kiln inspired by my last course at JCC. Threw 12 more yesterday and of those 12, they all survived the trimming process. Now, we'll see who survives drying.

Happy Holidays!

Four Corners Pottery Video

testing whether this video will show up like this, or if it has to be embedded.

A note to my pottery friends.

You will be hearing from me.

Posting photos of our pots to this site is just too easy to let it slip, and I've let it slip for most of this year.

I'm going to do better.

So you will be hearing from me via facebook or email, asking you to post some photos of your pots.  Details in that message.

It's sooo easy.  Let's do it.

Slip Decorated Pots from JCCFS

These are two of the little pots I made at the John C Campbell Folk School pottery course in October.  The point was surface decoration using colored slips instead of glazes.  Both of these are Laguna BMix clay, fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln.  We mixed up about half a dozen different little buckets of slip, colored with different mason stains or oxides. The slip went on leather hard pots, which were then bisqued and then full-fired with a coat of clear glaze.  We also put liner glazes on the insides of the pots that seemed to require it.  The colors stayed pretty true to the original raw slip colors, except for the rosy pink which just went brown.

The bowl is an asian looking theme with brushed on decorations.  The tumbler is several layers of colored slip with lots of scraffitto (scratch-throughs).  It looked like way overmuch when I did it, but the final result was just festive.

First the bowl was bisqued. Then I put little pieces of tape on it and painted it with green underglaze. I peeled off the tape and filled in the spaces with different underglazes. Then I dipped the whole thing in clear glaze. I think it must have been overfired because the colors came out darker and more intense than I expected.

Merry Christmas!

It's almost that time.  Are you making your Christmas presents this year?

New York folks, Ingrid is interested in doing an Empty Bowls project.  I will try to get her to post something here.  Meanwhile, ask her about it.

More to come.
